Internet Speed for Gaming
Everything you need to know about ping, download speed, and upload speed for online gaming.
Minimum vs Recommended Gaming Speeds
Download
Minimum
3 Mbps
Recommended
20+ Mbps
Upload
Minimum
1 Mbps
Recommended
5+ Mbps
Ping
Minimum
< 100ms
Recommended
< 30ms
Note: Gaming actually uses very little bandwidth. Ping is far more important than download speed for online gaming.
Ideal Ping by Game Type
< 20ms
Competitive FPS (Valorant, CS:GO, Apex)
Every millisecond counts in 1v1 duels
< 40ms
Battle Royale (Fortnite, PUBG, Warzone)
Fast pacing requires low latency
< 50ms
Sports Games (FIFA, Rocket League)
Timing-based gameplay needs responsiveness
< 100ms
RPGs & MMOs (WoW, Genshin Impact)
Less time-critical, more forgiving
< 150ms
Casual / Turn-Based Games
Ping barely matters for these genres
Why Ping Matters More Than Speed for Gaming
Online games typically use only 3–10 Mbps of bandwidth. Even a very slow 10 Mbps connection is more than enough for gaming. What matters is how fast your inputs reach the server — that is ping. A player with 200 Mbps download but 80ms ping will consistently lose to a player with 20 Mbps download but 10ms ping in games like Valorant or CS:GO.
How to Improve Your Gaming Connection
- Use Ethernet — plugging in directly dramatically reduces ping and jitter vs WiFi
- Connect to closer game servers — always choose the region closest to your physical location
- Close bandwidth-heavy apps — YouTube, Spotify, or cloud backups running in the background add latency
- Enable QoS on your router — prioritize gaming traffic over other household usage
- Upgrade your router — a gaming-optimized router with proper QoS makes a real difference
- Use a gaming VPN — services like Exitlag can sometimes route around congested ISP paths
